It has been decades since the Philippines was honoured of the prestigious Miss Universe crown. The coveted title remained elusive for the archipelago — as Philippine representatives become runner ups — in the recent years’ pageant finals. After 42 years, Miss Philippines has now been crowned Miss Universe 2015.
Held in Las Vegas, Nevada last week, the audience went on an uproar as Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez Arevalo, was initially declared to be Miss Universe 2015. That is until the pageant host, Steve Harvey, comes back on stage and admits his shocking gaffe, thus, revealing Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, to be the actual winner.
In spite of the controversies, both candidates kept their poise during the live telecast. Seemingly at a loss for words, the normally well-spoken Filipina candidly describes the situation as ‘a very non-traditional crowning moment’.
After a few days, Gutiérrez seems to recover from the experience and posts a message on her Instagram saying, “I also want to congratulate the Philippines for their new Miss Universe. The happiness that you must be feeling must be incredible.”
Wurtzbach also sends her well-wishes to the Colombian beauty through Miss Universe’s Official Instagram: “To Ariadna, you are an amazing woman and we are now bonded together forever by a unique experience. In the last 3 weeks we were together, I saw how strong and beautiful you are inside and out. Fate has a plan for you, and I’m excited to see what’s ahead.”
