Founded by Singaporean fashion designer Priscilla Shunmugam, contemporary womenswear label Ong Shunmugam launched its debut collection in 2010. Today, it is one of Singapore’s most successful fashion brands, celebrated for its unconventional take on the conventional cheongsam and the integration of traditional Asian textiles into modern silhouettes.

But being a fashion designer was not the natural path that Priscilla has set out for herself and of what her family had expected of her. “I graduated from law school. (The) strangest thing was, I felt that I achieved something (but) at the same time I felt that I had nothing,” she professed.

“At that point of time I felt that the best thing to do was to follow my instincts so much to the disappointment of everyone around me. I left the legal industry, and I decided that I had enough.” Accomplished yet purposeless as she was, Priscilla was determined for change. She left for London to pick up dressmaking, but that only signalled the beginning of her true destiny.
