This season’s Coach girl is of an entirely different breed, but we don’t mind trying to figure her out – she looks like she’s having so much fun that we definitely want whatever she’s having, and wearing. With her candy-coloured mohair parkas, Gary Baseman caricatures all over her shirts, and bold printed slides, it’s easy to see why she’s having the time of her life.
Stuart Vevers referenced retro looks for this collection as seen in pieces like the mod skirts and a leopard spotted pea coat – but the vibe pays homage to icons of youth culture. The Creative Director played with the juxtaposition of utility and luxury last season, and he continued to explore that theme for Spring Summer 2015. This time, though, there is a sense of “everydayness” with the inclusion of street wear in the collection. It features comfy luxe pieces with a twist such as sleek pool slides with turn locks, wooden clogs with metallic leather and a red dot matrix canvas backpack. Vevers also cited New York as an inspiration, a cultural melting pot that made his Coach girl enjoy a little bit of everything – she’s an indie girl, a skater girl and a surf girl rolled into one.
As always, the handbags command our attention. One of the collection’s highlights is the reworked Swagger tote. The roomy, work wear staple features the iconic turn locks that are elongated and doubled on a belt. The Swagger comes in contrast colours and metallics, but its boldest style is the one in sophisticated patchwork quilting that looks classy and quirky at the same time. Meanwhile, the new Drifter flap bags were worked into an array of eye-catching colours like periwinkle, acid yellow and puce that are perfect for casual wear. And lastly, there’s the Dakotah Crossbody that featured prominently among Coach’s key looks of the season – a diminutive bag worn across the body and over outerwear for a bit of attitude.
It’s an all-new look for the American fashion house this season, one that is vibrant, energetic and effortlessly cool. If it isn’t obvious yet, we want that playful, moody Coach girl vibe and we want it now.
