You know the formula to losing weight: burn more calories than you consume. Sounds simple in theory but putting it into practice can be very challenging. Any lifestyle change is difficult, especially when the culprits behind your weight gain are long term eating habits you’ve had for years. So even if you sweat it out at the gym everyday, you can’t fully achieve the goals of your weight loss plan unless you address those habits that slow down your metabolism. Most people think that skipping breakfast will help shed pounds. Well, there is a reason why breakfast is considered as the “most important meal of the day.” Breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism and prevents your body from conserving energy in the form of fat as it has not received nutrients and energy since the night before.
Tip: Take time to eat a high-fibre, low-fat, protein and nutrient-filled meal in the morning. If you can’t have a heavy meal, go with a homemade fruit smoothie, yogurt with fruits or breakfast bars.

You are a busy woman and you find it difficult to find time to sit down and have a healthy meal. You tend to just grab a coffee in between meetings, get a takeaway meal from a fast food restaurant and snatch a chocolate bar from your desk. Being in a hurry leads to mindless eating, unhealthy food choices and unwanted calories in your diet.
Tip: Leave a stash of healthy snacks in your car and desk drawer. So when hunger strikes, you can snack on dried fruit, nuts and whole-grain crackers instead of a bag of chips from the vending machine.

You tend to treat yourself with food as a reward for good behaviour. You’ve survived a long workout? Your proposal got approved? You then reward yourself with glasses of champagne and a huge box of chocolates.
Tip: Instead of making food your prize for a job well done, indulge yourself with zero-calorie pampering treats such as a long bath, a massage or a good book.

Liquid calories seem so innocuous, but can do lots of damage to your weight loss plan. Beer, wine and spirits mercilessly pack on the calories. They even have the effect of making you crave for food, causing you to eat more during a meal.
Tip: Always eat first before heading to the bar or to a party. Limit yourself to one to two drinks and space each drink with a glass of water.
