Sleeping in tents when exploring Africa, flying first class to style celebrities and now embracing her new home in California, Andrea Lieberman injects a kaleidoscope of exotic experiences into her collections and it shows. “I want to make the clothes you pack in your suitcase,” says Lieberman of her New York-based brand A.L.C. (which stands for Andrea Lieberman Collection), “the pieces that can take you from the streets of LA to the Carrousel du Louvre to the beaches of Monaco.” Soft silhouettes and day-to-night separates mixed with a tinge of tribal flair culminate in beloved essentials that you just can’t imagine any getaway trip without.

Lane Crawford: Who is your greatest style icon?
Andrea Lieberman: The love child of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Serge Gainsbourg.
LC: Where is your go-to place for inspiration?
AL: I was born and raised in New York but have been living in Los Angeles for the past five years and more than ever I am embracing the city. I love walking down Abbot Kinney boulevard, stumbling upon a skate park on the Venice boardwalk, shopping in the lumberyard in Malibu, taking a trip to the LACMA for the James Turrell exhibit. For me, right now, my inspiration doesn’t come from a single place but cities that I find inspiring.
LC: What is your creative process like – is it planned and meticulous or a combination of spontaneous ideas?
AL: I have a clear vision of the A.L.C. girl but the creative process from season to season is more instinctive. It can be triggered by an idea for a print, a Sam Haskins’s photograph, the discovery of the perfect shade of mint to the piece I am missing in my closet. Without fail, at the end of each season I wonder how I got to this place, how a small idea materialised into a fully formed collection and I think that spontaneity is the beauty of the creative journey.
LC: What do you never leave the house without?
AL: My iPhone. Most of the time it’s dead or dying but it always makes it into my bag.
LC: What can’t you live without?
AL: My kids, a striped T-shirt, preferably a muscle-T and black skinny jeans.
