Five British Beauty Brands You Have To Try

Over here at GlamAsia, we’re fans of all things English – we obsess over Kate Middleton’s style, went gaga over Victoria Beckham’s runway shows, and love our floral Cath Kidston accessories. But did you know that the British also has some really awesome makeup brands? Whether you can get them here, or whether you’ll have to hold out till you next get on a plane to the UK, we bring you five English beauty brands you absolutely have to try, as well as our own personal picks from the range!

NailsIncVictoria-polish

1. Nails Inc
Nails Inc is, in our humble opinion, one of the best nail polish brands to come out of the UK. With a great range of on-trend colours and finishes, a buttery-smooth application, and good wear-time, we can’t get enough of this brand! Bonus: the colour names are named after streets in London, too!
Our picks: Classic bestsellers include Victoria, an on-trend oxblood, and Elizabeth Street, a sheer pink nude, but if you’re willing to try something more, go for Jermyn Street, a super-chic greige that’s timeless.

Illamasqua intense lipgloss-move

2. Illamasqua
Often thought of as the UK’s answer to MAC, Illamasqua combines daring colours, a love for the theatrical and dramatic, and impeccable product quality to have emerged as one of the British brands to have a huge following the world over. While we drool over nearly everything in their line (it’s that good), we have a special place on our hearts for their powder blushes, which have a silky feel with ultra-dense pigmentation, and the lip products, especially the Intense Lipgloss and Lipsticks, which have the coolest colours, a great texture, and rich pigmentation. Soon to launch in Singapore, watch this space for more updates.
Our picks: The Powder Blusher in Katie, a universal light pink, is one of the brand’s most popular shades, as is the nail polish in Baptiste, a deep, shimmery eggplant. We also love the Intense Lipgloss in Move, a wearable mauve pink, and the Lipstick in Eurydice, a warm bright pink with shimmer.

3. Ciate
Ciate is a nail polish brand, with the cutest ribboned bottles ever. Of course, a great range of colours, as well as generally good application and wear go a long way towards cementing the brand’s fanbase. Ciate is also best known for their trendy nail polish sets, which feature every trend and form of nail art you can possibly imagine – the caviar manicure, the foil manicure, the velvet manicure, and the chalkboard manicure.
Our picks: The nail polish in Sharp Tailoring, a classic-but-not-boring greige, as well as the Chalkboard Manicure Nail Art Set – of course you can DIY, but Ciate’s sets make it so much easier! And it’s fun to doodle on your own nails, too.

Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir

4. Jo Malone
Supposedly one of Kate Middleton’s brands of choice during the royal wedding, Jo Malone candles, handwashes, and lotions in the scents Orange Blossom, Grapefruit and the popular Lime, Basil & Mandarin were used in the bathrooms of Westminster Abbey during her wedding for guests’ use. But it’s not just the toiletries that are covetable, we also love the brand’s perfumes, which are well-composed, lovely, and evocative.
Our Picks: If you’re curious and want to try the products favoured by Kate, we say go for it! But if you’re looking for a splash of perfume, try Pomegranate Noir or Orange Blossom, which are both highly-rated among perfume aficionados.

illuminum-white-gardenia-petals-50-100ml-2733-p

5. Illuminum Fragrance
Another favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge, this little-known fragrance brand shot to popularity when Kate Middleton wore their White Gardenia Petals scent at her wedding. As you might guess, Illuminum promptly sold out of the scent. But it’s not just the Duchess of Cambridge – across the Atlantic, apparently Michelle Obama is also a fan.
Our picks: Alright, alright, we don’t slavishly copy what every celebrity wears, but White Gardenia Petals, with its white floral notes over a base of amber, is a pretty, wearable scent. But if you’re in the market for something more exotic, try Tomato Leaf, which in addition to carrot and tomato leaf notes, also features a pretty jasmine middle note over a base of amber and vanilla.
