Tip #1: Exfoliate regularly
Often overlooked, regular exfoliation ensures that the dead skin cells that accumulate at the top of your skin’s surface is removed, so new, brighter skin can be revealed. Also, getting rid of the layer of dead skin cells ensures that the products that you apply thereafter can be absorbed more easily.
Use: Perricone MD Blue Plasma (S$177). This is a peel that’s gentle enough for daily use yet works just like a traditional peel. It is non-acidic and only removes dead skin cells. There’s also no need to wash it off after application – you can just continue with your serum and moisturizer after using it.
Tip #2: Invest in an effective targeted treatment
If you’ve identified achieving spotless skin as your key skincare concern, then make sure you invest in effective products that do precisely that. We’re looking at mainly serums and essences (that are applied after the toner and before the moisturizer) because they’re typically formulated with smaller molecules to facilitate penetration into the skin, and are also enriched with more potent active ingredients to correct skin’s appearance from the deepest level possible.
Use: SK-II Whitening Spot Specialist (S$258) or Cellumination Essence EX (S$299). The former is formulated specially for eliminating the appearance of pigmentation and spots, and you can read more about it here [link to Pick of the Week: SK-II Whitening Spot Specialist]. The latter helps to improve the skin’s aura lucency level so it can emit natural glow.
Tip #3: Protect your skin from UV rays
UVA rays are probably the biggest culprit for causing spots and pigmentation to appear on skin. This is why using a good sunscreen every day – even when you’re staying indoors most of the time – is important. If you’re doing sports, remember to use a sunscreen of at least SPF50, and reapply regularly.
Use: Elizabeth Arden Visible Whitening Multi-Targeted UV Shield BB Cream (S$80). This comes with SPF30 and is tinted to give some coverage, which means you can skip foundation altogether, if you wish. It also carries the benefits of whitening, by disrupting melanin production.
Tip #4: Visit a spa regularly for facial treatment
To give your regular skincare regime even more mileage, visit a spa once a while and go specifically for a whitening facial treatment. At the spa, the therapist will be using machines and special massage techniques that will ensure that immediate results can be delivered.
Go for: Lancome Whitening Treatment (S$280, 90 minutes) at the Lancome Beauty Institute. The treatment uses the star products from Lancome’s Blanc Expert series, Melanolyser (that treats spots) and Derm Crystal (that gives your skin an overall translucency). Coupled with the use of an ultrasound machine and a specific massage for whitening, it helps skin look luminous and healthy right after the treatment.
Tip #5: Eat right
Finally, skin care without eating healthily is not sufficient. Go for raw foods, especially those that are fortified with vitamins and antioxidants. These include tomatoes and berries. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna and cod also carry high levels of Omega-3, which is also beneficial to the skin.
