Who knows the seeming austerity of monastery life can inspire the supposedly frivolous nature of fashion? Ashburn Eng, local designer of label young&restless, is proof it can.
He had a dream one night in which he saw a monk riding on a lotus. Through the dream, he was inspired by how a single piece of cloth could be draped, patched, gathered and wrapped together seamlessly to form a cocoon silhouette.
The result? The young&restless spring/summer 2012 collection in which Eng fused that inspiration with a hint of galactic goth mood and created an east-meets-west monastic look.
This range illustrates an extension of his interest in spiritual and austere elements, evident in the monastic looks. It also reveals a looser and lighter silhouette through sheer fabrics in black, white, stone grey and metallic shades.
